Kisii County Government to support empowerment initiated by women

The Kisii County Government will support empowerment projects initiated by women, Governor James Ongwae has said.

Speaking at the Gusii Stadium during a funds drive in aid of the local chapter of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO), Governor Ongwae said his administration was committed to women empowerment.

Last year, the County Government sponsored 50 MYWO officials for a leadership and entrepreneurship training at the Cooperative University, a move that has enabled them develop a strategic plan.

Citing UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Ongwae said: “Women are not just the target of special measures to promote development – they are the driving force to overcome poverty, reduce hunger, fight illiteracy, heal the sick, prevent the spread of disease and promote stability.”

He praised the hardworking nature of the Kisii woman saying they only needed support to move to the next level and announced that his government will help set up an office for MYWO. Over KShs.2.1million was raised in the funds drive held at the Gusii Stadium.

Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, First Lady Mrs. Elizabeth Ongwae, Speaker Kerosi Ondieki, nominated senator Janet Ong’era, Women Reps Mary Otara (Kisii), Alice Chae (Nyamira) , Zipporah Kering (Nandi) and Kisii County Commissioner Chege Mwangi were present at the function.
