The Kisii County Government is stepping up efforts to keep towns clean and boost recycling through the rollout of colour-coded waste bins designed to make waste segregation easier and more effective.
Governor Simba Arati said the bins will be strategically placed in major towns to promote proper waste disposal and curb the dumping of garbage along roadsides. He said the county has already kicked off waste collection and sorting to ensure waste is properly managed instead of being dumped along roads.
The initiative will see green bins used for organic waste, black bins for general waste and blue bins for recyclable materials, in line with the colour-coding scheme approved by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The county will also distribute more than 50 skip bins across markets to strengthen waste collection. The waste will be collected and transported by skip loader trucks to the county’s waste management facility, where it will be sorted for recycling and proper disposal.
Arati urged traders to make proper use of the bins, saying responsible waste disposal is key to keeping Kisii clean and creating a healthier environment.
The move is expected to transform waste management in Kisii by putting segregation, recycling and responsible disposal at the heart of the county’s cleanliness drive.
