Governor Ongwae inaugurates Kisii Municipality Board

Kisii County Governor James Ongwae today inaugurated the Kisii Municipality Board which will be in charge of managing the Kisii Municipality.

The Board membership is made up of representatives from diverse organizations and associations including professionals, the business community and town dwellers.

“To ensure efficiency in service delivery and public satisfaction, the Board membership is made up of representatives from diverse organisations and associations including town dwellers, the business community and professionals. It will be Administratively headed by the Municipal Manager,” said Ongwae.

The Municipal Board will take care of the construction and maintenance of municipal markets, abattoirs, fire stations, emergency and disaster management within the municipality as well as promoting sports and cultural activities within the township.

The board is led by Municipality Manager Nahashon Ongeri and Chairman Jamaldin Shamji. Members of the board include Linet Moruri, Albert Otungu, Judson Nyambane, Pius Abuki, Obote Motonu, Elizabeth Nyabonyi and Alfred Onwonga.

Governor Ongwae thanked the County Assembly for approving the Municipality Charter and subsequently approving the names of the nominees who will serve in the inaugural Municipality Board.

“Kisii Municipality is only the first among our urban areas in this arrangement. We expect more of our major towns to achieve similar status in the near future, pursuant to the Urban Areas and Cities Act, so as to offer residents better services and attract investment,” said Ongwae.

The Governr indicated that the outer boundaries of the Municipality of Kisii will now cover Bobaracho, Menyinkwa, Milimani, Erera, Nyanchwa Teachers Training College, Getembe Primary School, Nubia, Nyabioto and Gesonso Main Bridge.

Other areas within the stipulated 70 Kilometer municipality radius include; the region around Waterpark Hotel, Nyabururu Teachers Training College, Embassy, Nyakoe, Nyatieko, Getare, KALRO, Kionganyo Hill, Kegati, Kiogoro, Masongo and Itibo Shopping Center and the boundary may be reviewed from time to time.

“The Municipality status for Kisii town is a laudable advancement that will improve the ability of Kisii town to independently benefit from intercity or twin city development and capacity building partnerships both locally and internationally,” he said.

The Governor who was accompanied by his Deputy Joash Maangi, County MP Janet Ongera, County Commissioner Godfrey Kigochi among other senior government officers was optimistic that under the new status, avenues of town management will be bolstered to effectively respond to the residents’ expectations.

He announced that already the World Bank has granted the Municipality funds for development and capacity building to operationalize the municipality.

“Through the World Bank funded Urban support programme we have received164 million Kenya shillings for various development activities in the Municipality,” he said.

The funds, Ongwae said will be utilized in putting up of a fire station, improvement of urban roads within the municipality, drainage works, and pedestrian walkways.

Also, through the programme, the Municipality is set to receive 42 million shillings for institutional framework, capacity building and establishment of Municipality administration offices.

Under the new management, issues like the provision of refuse collection and solid waste management services in Kisii municipality will be enhanced.

And the governor advised the board to prioritise and fast track the acquisition of a piece of land for solid waste management.

The municipality board will now take care of Water and sanitation services and infrastructure in areas within the Municipality boundaries which are not served by the Water and services provider (GWASCO).

Ongwae asked the new town management to clean the two rivers flowing through the town, namely Nyanchwa and Nyakomisaro which converge at Daraja Mbili and flow to Riana.

He said that due to uncontrolled development on the Riparian reserve, effluent discharge into the rivers has been a menace and we are glad the Municipality Board will now reverse the trend and have our rivers cleaned as per Law established.
