Government signs a KShs.1billion deal with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) for the construction of a modern cancer treatment Centre in Kisii

The Government yesterday signed a KShs.1billion deal with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) for the construction of a modern cancer treatment Centre in Kisii.

CS Finance Henry Rotich signed the agreement with SFD representatives during a function at State House Nairobi.

Already, the Arab Bank for Development in Africa (BADEA) that is co-funding the project has signed another KShs.1billion agreement in a ceremony witnessed by Governor James Ongwae.

The total project cost will be US$22.8. BADEA has extended a loan amounting to US$10million (KShs.1billion) towards the co-financing of the project with Saudi Bank for Development (SFD), giving US$10million (KShs.1billion).

This paves way for implementation of this critical project that will boost the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, a non communicable disease that contributes highly to deaths in the region.

"This centre will transform healthcare service provision in Kisii and neighbouring counties. It will bring this critical service closer to the people and support Kisii University's medical school," said Governor James Ongwae.

The project implementation is set to start by July this year and it will take 18 months to complete.

It will occupy 5000 square metres of land and it will be fully equipped with theatres, four examination rooms, mammograms, observation ward, waiting rooms, lecture rooms, control room, 2 shielded rooms for X ray, CT Scanner, changing rooms for doctors and staff, an ICU with 12 beds and patient wards with 40 beds.

The scope of the project includes detailed design and supervision, training and capacity building for medical staff.

"The establishment of the cancer centre in Kisii County will boost early detection of the disease and reduce the cost incurred by patients who have to travel to Kenyatta National Hospital and even abroad for the service," observed Rotich during the signing ceremony.

Patients spend Sh500 to Sh1, 000 per session for radiotherapy at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Chemotherapy costs Sh6, 000 to Sh 600, 000 depending on the drug used. In private health facilities like Cancer Care Kenya, it costs about Sh50, 000 a week for radiotherapy.

For chemotherapy, the cost varies depending on the drug used with most ranging from Sh12, 000 to Sh200, 000 per treatment.
