Governor James Ongwae feted Olympian Hellen Onsando Obiri for her colorful accolades in the world of athletics.
Obiri, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics Silver medalist, hails from Kisii County in Bobasi Sub County.
Governor Ongwae heaped praises on the illustrious athlete and encouraged young people to explore their talents in sport.
The fete was organized in conjunction with the Royal Media Services' Citizen Radio and Egesa FM.
"As a County Government aware that the functions related to Culture, Youth, Sports and Social Services are not fully devolved, we have put mechanisms in place to be able to address issues relating to sports." Said the governor.
“I introduced the Governor’s Cup programme in all the nine sub Counties, starting from the ward level. The main agenda was to identify young talented youths in the County, support and nurture them by equipping them with training skills in sports. I have endeavored to improve sports facilities to provide recreational facilities and nurture talent beginning with the Gusii Stadium.” Said Ongwae.
Ongwae said that in the Sub Counties, the county is improving community playgrounds in each of the 45 wards. "Works include levelling of grounds, fencing and erecting of goalposts.
Despite the challenges that we face, we continue to focus on improving the overall welfare of the people of Kisii County as we deliver on our mandate." He added. Ongwae called upon success athletes from Kisii County like Obiri to invest back at home to support socio-economic development.
Veteran broadcaster Fred Obachi Machoka encouraged young people in Gusiiland to explore their talents in sports as a source of income
